One of the most used words in the community other than fashion and sprezzatura has to be the S word which we know as style, in this case we're referring to it based on how we dress. It's a word we so adorn and magnify that it has become the epitome of why and how dress up for occasions.
Yves Saint Laurent said fashion fades, style is eternal.
Bill Cunningham claims fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life.
Diane von Furstenberg said style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it.
Alber Elbaz says style is the only thing you can't buy.
And following on from that Iris Afpel says fashion you can buy, but style you possess.
One of the quotes I quite fancy out of the many of course is that from Rachael Zoe saying "Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak." A common belief is that a lot of effort and time must be put into exhibiting style. However, in this brief writing I would like to offer you a different perspective in developing and expressing your own style.
Firstly, I believe for one to fully express their true sense of style that individual must first learn the principle rules of style itself. Furthermore, an aspect of style that one must master is fit. A common saying in the sartorial community is "Fit is king" meaning that one may compromise on the quality of the fabric and possibly the quality of the construction of the garment but the one thing that cannot be compromised on is fit. So even if it is a cheap garment, it has to look spot on seeing as fit is so critical. One of the main misconceptions about style that is ravaging the younger generation is that for something to fit well it must be tight, short or skinny. However, when taking a deeper look at how to style the garments one puts on whether it may be a shirt, overcoat, blazer, or pants, all must must have that element of drape. The word drape typifies the garment falling naturally on the person's body and not being too snug as shown in the picture beside. For example, in this picture we can see that the tie holds quite a middle in that its not too narrow nor too wide. Furthermore, we see that the jacket isn't too short or tight around the shoulders or around the belly region but just has very minimal pulling to form just a bit of tension in making sure the jacket isn't baggy. As a result the gentleman in the picture doesn't just look stylish but also has the added benefit of being comfortable in his garment. As a result, when a proper garment is made, an individual can raise up his hand to call a taxi without worrying about his clothing getting ruffled and possibly ripping because of the tension. In wrapping up the fit shown above, an incredibly important factor about the jacket is that it is sitting directly on his shirt collar and not developing what we know as a "collar gap" which is shown below.
It is therefore important for one to come into the complete knowledge on the principle rules before really being able to express what they feel is their true style. The above points were only a few pointers on how garment should really fit and some more links below will be provided to give a more in depth analysis of how garments ought to fit.
